A red and white Chinook helicopter drops water on a burning forest, with the tank gauge, compass and minimap on screen

How it plays

Dip. Fly. Drop. Save the town.

Wildfires are burning in a valley of pine forest, lakes and mountains. Every load counts: the closer the water, the faster you are back over the fire.

  1. A yellow CL-415 Super Scooper skims across a blue lake, scooping water
    1

    Dip

Hover low with a snorkel, dunk a bucket on a long line, or skim a lake in a scooper plane. Airtankers reload back at base.

  2. A firefighting plane flies over forested hills toward the airtanker base, with smoke on the horizon
    2

    Fly

Follow the smoke columns, the compass and the minimap. A full load makes you heavier, slower to climb and slower to turn.

  3. A Chinook helicopter releases a cloud of water over burning pine trees
    3

    Drop

Water keeps your forward speed and drifts with the wind, so lead the target. A ring on the ground shows where it will land.

Made by someone who flies fires

Fun first, but the firefighting is real

Dip & Drop was made by someone who works in aerial firefighting and couldn't find a simple, fun game that flies the aircraft seen working fires in the field. So the details that matter are in:

  • Real ways to fill: hover snorkels, buckets on a long line, scooping on the run, and the reload pit.
  • Water that behaves: it keeps your speed, drifts with the wind and spreads with height. Drop from 100–300 ft.
  • Fire that fights back: it runs uphill and downwind, throws spot fires and goes for the houses.
  • Firebreaks work: wet ground won't burn for about five minutes, so lay a line ahead of the fire.

Stars, ranks and paint schemes

Every graded fire and Daily Fire gives up to three stars. Stars raise your pilot rank, and ranks and achievements unlock paint schemes for your whole fleet. Your logbook keeps flight time, drops, gallons and houses saved.

Progress saves in your browser, and a backup code moves it to another computer.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is Dip & Drop free?

Yes. Dip & Drop: Wildfire Pilot is free to play in your web browser, with no download, no account and no ads.

What do I need to play?

A computer with a keyboard and mouse and an up-to-date browser such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. The game uses 3D graphics (WebGL), and a Graphics: Low setting helps on older laptops.

Can I play on my phone or tablet?

Not yet: the web version is flown with a keyboard and mouse. iPhone and Android versions are planned. Sign up on the mobile page to get one email when they are ready.

What aircraft can I fly?

Seven aircraft in nine setups: the CH-47 Chinook (internal tank or Bambi bucket), S-64 Skycrane, UH-60 Black Hawk (belly tank or bucket), UH-1H Huey with a bucket, CL-415 Super Scooper, AT-802F Fire Boss and the C-130H Hercules airtanker.

How realistic is it?

It is an arcade-style flight game with realistic firefighting ideas: helicopters hover-fill with snorkels or dip buckets, scooper planes skim lakes, airtankers reload at a base, water keeps your forward speed and drifts with the wind, drops work best from 100 to 300 feet, and fire runs faster uphill and downwind. Fill times are shortened to keep it fun.
