S-64 Skycrane
The flying crane. A 2,650-gallon tank that fills by hover snorkel or by skimming the water with a sea snorkel.
Loadout
Fixed tank
2,650 gallons
Fill: Hover snorkel: full in about 6 seconds, hovering low over water under 10 kt. Or skim at 30–45 kt with the sea snorkel: full in about 4.5 seconds.
Drop: A full load releases in 3 seconds; tap for partial drops.
Flying the Skycrane
It flies like the other helicopters but feels bigger and slower, with one huge six-blade main rotor. Come in low over water under 50 kt and both snorkels come down.
To fill, either hover below 10 kt or keep moving between 30 and 45 kt just over the surface. Holding Shift settles you at a height that works for both.
Tips
- Scooping on the move saves the time you would spend slowing to a hover. Line up along the longest stretch of water.
- It is the tank you get in Town Threat. Protect the houses first.
The real Skycrane
The Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane is a "flying crane": a slim fuselage on long legs with almost nothing below the rotor but open space, built to carry heavy loads on a hook. Its pilot station even has a seat that faces backwards for watching the load.
Firefighting versions carry a fixed tank of around 2,500 gallons between the legs. Besides hovering to fill, they can lower a ram-air "sea snorkel" and fill on the move, skimming a few feet over a lake.
